Women's Philanthropy and Teaching Children the Art of GivingAlthough women have long been involved in philanthropic activity, during the last 25 years women's participation as donors, fundraisers, nonprofit leaders, and change agents has expanded exponentially. As women have assumed greater leadership roles in the workplace, and as decision makers in their homes, they are looking to impact philanthropy in innovative and creative ways. One way is to engage their children in philanthropy. With many families stretched for time and resources, however, fitting giving activities into the family schedule may seem daunting. But, it can actually be quite easy and natural. Among the keys to raising charitable children are starting when they are young, being a role model, and helping kids explore their options for places to donate time and money, then letting them make their own choices. Learn about the growth of women's philanthropy as well as new trends and practical ideas for teaching children about giving, and take home the publication "A Plan of One's Own: A Woman's Guide to Philanthropy". This presentation will be given by Buffy Beaudoin-Schwartz who is the Communications Director at the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers (ABAG), the Greater Baltimore region's premier resource on philanthropy, dedicated to informing grantmakers and improving our community. ABAG members include representatives of more than 130 private foundations and corporations with strategic, ongoing grantmaking programs. Buffy has co-authored a book on women's giving entitled "A Plan of One's Own: A Woman's Guide to Philanthropy," co-authored the national report: "Growing Philanthropy Through Giving Circles," and was a contributing author to the recently published "The Transformative Power of Women's Philanthropy." She currently writes a bi-monthly column in SmartWoman Magazine called "Philanthropically Speaking" and is an active volunteer serving on a number of boards and committees in the community. |
